Learn how you could participate in a research study of an investigational drug for preventing respiratory illness associated with Respiratory Tract Infections (RTIs).

LMC Manna Research would like to let you and your families know about a research study that we are conducting at our clinics. We are recruiting volunteers who are over the age of 65 and are non-smokers to participate in a clinical research trial that will provide access to an investigational medication that may help prevent respiratory tract infections such as cold, flu, pneumonia and bronchitis. Participation in this research study is voluntary. If you don’t wish to take part, you don’t have to.

Doctors want to learn whether the investigational drug may help prevent respiratory illness associated with RTIs by improving the function of blood cells that fight infections. Improving the ability to fight infections is important in people age 65 and older due to the increased risk of serious illness from RTIs.

The investigational drug is taken by mouth and is not approved in any country to prevent RTI symptoms.

Doctors want to compare the safety and effectiveness of the investigational drug. They also want to compare it to placebo, which looks like the investigational drug, but contains no active medication. The results of this study will provide doctors with more information about the investigational drug and whether it could one day be used to prevent RTI symptoms.

What will happen in this study?
If you are eligible for this study, you will be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to receive either the investigational drug or placebo. You have an equal chance of receiving either study drug or placebo. You will take your assigned study drug once a day for 16 weeks. Your total study participation will last about 6 months, which includes approximately 10 study visits for evaluation, or more if you report an infection.  You will also receive a phone call from our clinic about 12 months after the start of the study to ask you some follow-up questions.

Who is eligible to participate in this study?
To pre-qualify for this study, you must be:

  • 65 years of age or older and NOT have one or more of the following conditions:
    • COPD, emphysema, type 1 diabetes mellitus, moderate to severe chronic heart failure (Class III-IV), current smoker or past smoker with ≥10 pack year (calculated by multiplying the number of packs you smoke a day by the number of years you have smoked) smoking history, or living with someone who currently smokes in the house.

All study-related visits, tests, and drugs will be provided at no cost. In addition, reimbursement for study-related travel will be provided.
